Challenges and Headwinds Facing Buffalo's Small Business Sector This Year

M&T Bank opened its rotating in-branch Spotlight Shop at the Kenmore branch to display products from local operators including Buffalo Gals by White Rabbit Designs, with additional pop-ups placed at Canalside through September 3, 2024.

Local programs still active
West Side Bazaar reopened at its expanded site at 1432 Niagara Street, housing 18 businesses that include eight restaurants and four food retail stands. Cardsmart, the family-owned greeting card store in Buffalo, appeared among 20 national operators selected for the QVC and HSN Small Business Spotlight. Strive Vending, started in 2011 by former Buffalo Bill Jon Corto and his wife Jen, now employs more than 70 people in the region. Buffalo Business First listed five 2026 Startups to Watch: Cosi Care, Edenesque, FoodNerd, Makeoff and PhysicianX.
Buffalo Startup Week ran from April 16 to 23, 2026, and included a Startup Draft that placed 11 local companies with investors. Nineteen Ideas began its Startup Wednesday pitch series on May 6, 2026, offering a total of $5,000 in cash prizes. The City of Buffalo continues to promote registration in its Small Business directory under the Buffalo Business Forward initiative, while the Small Business Development Center at SUNY Buffalo State supplies technical assistance to Erie County firms.
