Buffalo’s Green Tech Boom: Battery Expansion, Job Training, and a $6M Bet on Cardboard Insulation

Viridi Parente is adding 70,000 square feet to its 42-acre green tech campus in Buffalo, a move that will boost production of lithium-ion battery technology and clean power systems, the company announced. The expansion comes as Western New York’s clean-energy ecosystem gains momentum-35 cleantech companies now operate inside a state incubator, employing 281 people and collectively raising $206 million from investors, according to state data.
The timing matters. Upstate New York already has the cleanest electric power profile in the U.S.-hydropower accounts for 33% of its mix, compared with 6% nationally-giving Buffalo what local officials call a manufacturing advantage for battery-intensive operations. Viridi Parente’s campus, built on the former American Axle site, is emblematic of the region’s bet on brownfield redevelopment for green industry. The company received a $1.4 million low-interest loan from the Erie County Industrial Development Agency to manufacture battery-powered construction equipment alongside its stationary storage systems.
Training the Workforce for Clean Energy Jobs
PUSH Buffalo opened the region’s first green jobs training center, the Sustainability Workforce Training Center, on Buffalo’s West Side this year. The $2.5 million net-zero facility is designed to train residents for careers in clean energy and sustainable building-a direct response to the shortage of skilled workers that many cleantech employers cite as a growth bottleneck. The center joins other local initiatives, including a Net Zero House PUSH operates that showcases solar panels, geothermal heating, and advanced insulation techniques.
Meanwhile, the University at Buffalo now generates or purchases 100% of its electricity from renewable sources. Its on-campus solar array is among the largest in the country, producing 12 million kilowatt-hours annually-enough to power roughly 1,100 homes.
Startups and City-Backed Innovation
Buffalo startup Cleanfiber received $6 million in state funding to develop carbon-reducing building insulation made from recycled corrugated cardboard. The company is scaling production on the East Side, aiming to turn a waste stream into a product that cuts both landfill volume and building energy use.
The City of Buffalo is also moving its own operations toward clean technology. In October 2024, Buffalo earned a Two-Star Clean Energy Community designation, and grant funds are being used to roll out the first electric vehicles in the municipal fleet. Mayor Christopher P. Scanlon recently launched the Smart Curb Buffalo program, deploying digital signage, e-paper displays, and real-time sensors in three pilot areas-the Buffalo Niagara Medical Corridor, Chippewa Entertainment District, and Canalside-starting in late 2025. A broader Smart Streets Design Plan targets a seven-block stretch of Washington Street as the first pilot for repurposing curb space for alternative travel modes.
What comes next depends on sustained investment. The state incubator’s 35 cleantech companies have already raised $206 million, but scaling from 281 employees to the thousands needed to anchor a regional industry will require continued public-private collaboration. Viridi Parente’s campus expansion, the workforce training center, and Cleanfiber’s state-backed insulation all point in the same direction: Buffalo is betting that cheap hydropower, repurposed industrial sites, and a pipeline of trained workers can turn the city into a national clean-tech manufacturing hub. The next few years will test whether that bet pays off.
