This academic pipeline is complemented by the $400 million investment in the Empire AI Supercomputing Center. These institutional efforts support an ecosystem of over 30 companies utilizing AI in collaboration with UB, including medical billing firm Dentite and educational tool provider Uncharted, which receive support from incubators like 43North.
For established players, the focus remains on operational complexity. Local manufacturing giants such as Moog Inc. and General Motors Tonawanda are currently leveraging AI agents to manage intricate manufacturing processes. In the retail sector, companies are utilizing demand forecasting, shelf-level computer vision, and route optimization. According to industry analysis, these retail applications have successfully cut supply-chain errors by 20-50% and reduced stockouts from approximately 8% in targeted pilot programs.
Training and Future Integration
The roadmap for smaller firms involves bridging the gap between research and practical application. The University at Buffalo’s Center for AI Business Innovation is central to this effort, offering local marketers training, student consulting, and industry partnerships to facilitate 6-12 week AI pilots. This practical approach was further highlighted during the "Accelerate AI" conference held on June 17 at Seneca One Tower, which provided small-to-mid-sized Buffalo businesses with strategies to streamline operations through AI use cases.
As these pilot programs conclude, the local tech sector-which generated a $3.3 billion direct economic impact in 2025-is projected to see continued growth. Employment in the tech field is anticipated to increase by 7% through 2032. With over 72% of entry-level tech job postings now concentrated in downtown Buffalo and Amherst, the region is preparing to host a larger workforce equipped to manage the increasing complexity of AI-driven tools. For businesses looking to scale, the combination of federal Tech Hub grant support and existing incubator resources like 43North remains the primary avenue for incorporating these new developments into their 2026 growth strategies.
