Buffalo Green Tech Draws Funding Through Campus Growth and Training Programs

Viridi Parente is expanding its 42-acre green tech campus in Buffalo by adding 70,000 square feet to an 850,000-square-foot facility rehabilitated from a former GM plant, with the added space dedicated to lithium-ion battery technology and clean power systems.

Campus Growth Anchors Battery Production

The project targets industrial and microgrid storage applications. Upstate New York already holds the nation's cleanest electric power profile, with hydropower supplying 33 percent of generation compared to the 6 percent national average, a share powered largely by Niagara Falls output. Buffalo's designation as a Clean Energy Community, which reached Two-Star status in October 2024, has supported the purchase of the city's first electric vehicles through state grant funds.

Local startup Cleanfiber secured $6 million in state funding to produce carbon-reducing building insulation from recycled corrugated cardboard. The University at Buffalo generates or purchases 100 percent of its electricity from renewable sources and runs one of the largest on-campus solar arrays in the country, yielding 12 million kWh each year.

Workforce Programs and Salary Data Track Sector Expansion

PUSH Buffalo opened the region's first green jobs training center with a $2.5 million Sustainability Workforce Training Center on the West Side, aimed at clean energy and sustainable building careers. As of July 2026 the average annual salary for green tech positions in Buffalo stands at $65,440 across roles in renewable energy, energy efficiency and electric vehicles. Western New York currently hosts 35 cleantech companies that employ 281 people and have raised $206 million from investors.

These developments rest on documented state grants and private facility investments already in place. Further project announcements will depend on continued allocation of those same funding streams and on the pace of hiring at the expanded sites.
