Buffalo weekend events: Live music, garden walks and butterflies on tap as summer heats up

Buffalo’s summer event calendar is running full throttle heading into the third weekend of July, with live outdoor music, a sprawling self-guided garden tour and a tropical butterfly experience all on offer for residents and visitors alike.

The weekend’s anchor event is Sunset Sundays '26, a free live-music series set for Sunday, July 19 at Buffalo RiverWorks, the waterfront entertainment complex along the Buffalo River. The weekly program has become a warm-weather staple since its launch, drawing hundreds to the outdoor stage area for sets that typically run from early evening until dusk. RiverWorks is at 359 Ganson Street in the Old First Ward neighborhood.

What to do this weekend

For anyone looking to fill both Saturday and Sunday, the Garden Walk Buffalo is the weekend’s most ambitious activity. Scheduled for Saturday, July 25 through Sunday, July 26, the walk is a self-guided tour of historic residential gardens across three of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods: Elmwood Village, Allentown and North Park. The event is free and open to the public. Garden Walk Buffalo has been running annually since 1995 and typically draws thousands of participants who wander past hundreds of private gardens, many of them designed by local horticulturalists. No tickets or reservations are required, participants simply show up at any of the designated starting points and follow the map.

Families with younger children might prefer the Butterfly Experience at the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens, which runs through July 26. The exhibit, housed inside the glass-domed conservatory at 2655 South Park Avenue, allows visitors to walk through an enclosed tropical habitat where dozens of butterfly species flutter freely. The Botanical Gardens are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Butterfly Experience is included with general admission. Tickets cost $12.50 for adults, $11 for seniors and $9 for children ages 3 through 12. The attraction is a regular summer feature at the gardens, which date to the 1890s and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Looking ahead

Summer’s signature food event is still six weeks away: the National Buffalo Wing Festival returns to Sahlen Field, the downtown baseball stadium at 1 James D. Griffin Plaza, on Saturday and Sunday, August 29-30. The festival features dozens of wing vendors, live music and the annual chicken-wing eating competition. General admission tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the gate; children under 12 get in free. The event typically draws more than 70,000 attendees over two days.

For those who prefer their summer music with a side of open space, the Borderland Music and Arts Festival will take place September 18-19 at Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora, about 25 minutes southeast of downtown Buffalo. The festival is a two-day affair with multiple stages. Tickets and lineup details are expected to be announced closer to the date.

Practical advice: Most outdoor events this weekend are weather-dependent. Buffalo’s July average high is 81 degrees, with a roughly 40 percent chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Attendees should bring water, sunscreen and a rain jacket. Street parking in Elmwood Village and Allentown fills early on garden-walk weekends; the Buffalo Metro Rail can drop visitors within a few blocks of both neighborhoods. RiverWorks has a 400-space parking lot but also encourages ride-share drop-offs. The Botanical Gardens has a dedicated lot on South Park Avenue.
