Buffalo Parks Add Fitness Equipment, Creating Dog-Friendly Workout Spaces
Buffalo dog owners now combine daily walks with group workouts at several neighborhood parks that added fitness equipment last year.
How we reported this

More than 180 dog owners showed up at Delaware Park on the morning of July 8 for a 45-minute session of group stretches and agility drills along the park's eastern edge.
Buffalo's outdoor fitness scene has shifted toward shared spaces where residents exercise with their dogs instead of leaving pets at home, a change tied to the Erie County Parks Department's 2025 decision to install permanent resistance bands and balance beams at select sites.
Two parks drawing steady crowds
Delaware Park, bordered by Amherst Street and Elmwood Avenue, added a fenced dog exercise area near the Scajaquada Creek trail in April 2025; users can now alternate between 20-minute runs with their dogs and body-weight circuits on the new equipment. Cazenovia Park in South Buffalo, along Cazenovia Street, opened its own 0.8-mile fitness loop last summer with stations spaced every 200 yards that accommodate both human push-ups and dog jumps over low hurdles.
Local group Canine Circuit Buffalo runs free drop-in sessions at both parks on Tuesdays and Thursdays, drawing participants from the University Heights and Kaisertown neighborhoods.
Numbers behind the trend
Erie County Parks tallied 4,200 individual check-ins at the new dog-friendly fitness stations during the first six months of 2026, up from 2,900 in the same period of 2025. Registration for Canine Circuit Buffalo's summer schedule opened June 1 and reached capacity within ten days at the $15 per month rate for unlimited access.
Residents can find current schedules on the Erie County Parks website or at the Delaware Park boathouse information desk; first-time visitors are asked to bring proof of current rabies vaccination for their dogs before joining any group session.
